Help with strange internet access restrictions?

So, I've been dealing with having limited internet for some time now, but this is getting rediculous. There are times of the day, every day, when I simply have no internet access on my computer. (8AM - 5PM, and 12PM - 5AM) According to my dad, it's some company protocol; my dad's company apparently pays for the internet, and restricts when it can be accessed. And to some degree, I can believe that. (The 8AM-5PM 'business hours' thing makes some sense, in that way)

But it's really screwy. I recently purchased a laptop and built my own desktop both connecting to our wireless network, and my old computer connects through land-lines. Not only did both sets of computers (the wireless and landlines) have different schedules (The wireless ones didn't go out at night, but were still out during the day time), but my sisters laptop had a different schedule, even though she was connecting through the same exact wireless network that I was. (Her's stayed on through the daytime, but went out every night, unlike mine which did the opposite) And then, awhile later (I'd say a month and a half, though I was out of town for most of it), my wireless computers revert back to having the same schedule as the old computer, with no change to my sisters schedule.

Can anyone make some sense out of this nonsense? I don't think I changed any settings before my schedule switched back to a more restrictive one, I was messing around with an ad hoc network (one that I still can't get to go away...), but I don't know if that would have done it. Is it really possible for a company to not only control internet access, but restrict it from computer to computer? Would there be any way for me to fool that? To make it think that I'm a new computer again?
Help with strange internet access restrictions?
Hello Chess;

I don't mean to be strange but there is something very wrong with what you are saying. Why would it make sense to close a computer internet connection down -- unless the connection is being monitored? Consider that the whole idea of the internet is that the information is available any time.

As to your question -- the System Administrator is a little like God -- he can control pretty much any aspect of the system including hours of operation, access, and security. He can see every webpage and read every e-mail.

My advice is to check with the IT department to find out exactly what is going on.

Lets say that this is a real situation ... I would consider getting a real internet connection through the phone company.

Best of luck

Bill

Please save me, someone put a picture of me on the TOILET on the internet.?

I was in a crowded train station and I really had to use the bathroom (#2). I hated to do it but I had no choice. I went in the gross bathroom and began my business. Then some guy kicked open the door, took a picture of me, and said it was going on the internet! Then he said to give him my email and he will give me the link. I thought if I knew where it was I could tell the police the address so I gave him my email address. I didn't want to risk my wife or family or coworkers to see it! He sent me an email that said he changed his mind and wasn't going to post it as long as I gave him a bunch of people I knew's email addresses. He said so he could sell them amway. I figured it would be better that they got a spam email rather then see me on the toilet so I gave him a list. Then he sent EVERYONE on the list the pic of me on the toilet, including my wife and children, my friends and coworkers and my boss. There was also a fake audio clip of gross sound! What can I do? They laugh at me!
Please save me, someone put a picture of me on the TOILET on the internet.?
Oh my goodness.

That's the weirdest, terrible thing I've ever heard.

I'd get a lawyer. You should be able to sue for violation of privacy or slander. Since he wanted emails from you, maybe you could sue for extortion.

ADDITION: Wow, you're really funny. I just looked at your other questions, you goof. I'm actually surprised at myself for taking you seriously.
Please save me, someone put a picture of me on the TOILET on the internet.?
AAHAHAHAHAHA!! You're an idiot!! Sue the hell out of him... lol...
holy **** dude he kicked open the door while u were taking a sh-it thats so fake this is ****** funny
Is this true? I don't know how I can believe this.
I don't believe a word of that...the things some people do to get attention.

(If you are serious and this really did happen, you are silly for giving out any ones email address and I feel bad for you).

There is nothing you can do except laugh with them and go on with life...it will calm down sooner if you join in on the laughter.

It could be worse.
roflmao you have been scammed big time.

Take it on the chin.
LOL If you're an adult then just let it pass. You did nothing wrong and it was a crazy mishap. You could also have just said your head was photoshopped on there! There's nothing you can do about it so there's no point in stressing out, you know?
The damage is done, now al there is to do is rol with the punch! Respectfuly, you should have set your limits to never giving out anyone elses e-mail addresses, not ever! We al have to go to the bathrom to tkecare of our business, this is not an image that is difficult to imagine in your mind if your thinking about it, so the picture is realy no big deal, instead of the fact that it went to every one you know personaly, instead of out to people who would have never known who it was. Lesson learned.
that's hilarious! sorry but I can't help!
This sounds made-up, but if it's real then you may only be able to ride out the embarrassment, unless you know exactly who burst in on you and can prove to a proscecutor and jury he did it.
honestly it was your fault for giving him everyone you knows email address, what did you think he was going to do? in any event .. theres really not much you can do i mean, you could go to the police but honestly i dont think they would care .. you just have to laugh it off, things happen that you have no control over .. theres nothing else you can do
I think this person who did this is a real low life. You really should NOT have given him the information you did, no matter what.

I think those who are laughing at you wouldn't be laughing if they were shown in the same position. Shame on them.

Can you contact the website and have it removed?

This stuff is really getting out of hand. I'm sorry this happened to you.
can i see :D:D.
This is really mean what he done to you, i say, get a lawyer, youve got his email address.....just threaten him, say that youve got his IP address, and you are about to get him in serious trouble.....i feel really bad for you....worst thing you done, was give them your friends and families email address....the reason he woulda said so, is cause he can send them pictures of course!, thats a real stink story:(
just Tell them What happend
you are not alone in that, they're after me as well !!!!!!!!

Internet Explorer Help?

my computer was working fine until the other day, internet explorer would not work. regular websites wouldnt work, but when i clicked on some business websites i had saved (i work for my dads insurance agency) it worked, but i couldnt access things like google and yahoo. so i reset all internet settings and it started to work again. but i was getting pop ups even when my pop up blocker is on. and when i searched on google and clicked on a site, it would bring me to a random site searching ads for the topic i searched for. Next day internet explorer was not working again. i know it has nothing to do with my connection because everyone else on the network in the office isnt having problems. So i reset it again and its doiong the same thing. now when i try to login to out insurance rating system, i get a error message from IE saying something about Data Execution Prevention, and its closes me out. tried to change those settings but no luck. So do i have a virus? whats going on? any help is appreciated, thankyou =)

you might have a virus. I would download malwarebytes from download.com and once it is installed make sure it is updated and scan your computer. See if it finds anything.

Why does my internet explorer freeze everytime i connect my internet?

My stats are..

WINDOWS XP.

75GB Hard Drvie.

512MB RAM.

AVG Interent Security.

SpeedStream3632 Router.

BroadBand.

BigPond.

1500 Kbp/s Internet Speed.

Internet Explorer.

Firefox.

Internet Connected via Ethernet Chord.

Everytime i open my computer, despite the fact it is so SLOW. Like incredibly slow, i takes about 10 - 15 mins just to start up which is extremely agrivating. I have had someone who owns a computer-based business come to my house who had formatted my hard drive and given me many programs to help prevent this. Which i always do on a regular basis yet still seems to stay slow.

Ok. So the thing is, everytime my computer starts(with the ethernet chord not connected), its all fine, (Despite the speed everything loads at) i can open programs that do not need internet to run like iTunes and all that, they run all fine. When i connect the ethernet chord and the internet starts to run, i open Internet Explorer/Firefox and they both cannot find the home page. I have to resolve to delete the Program by CTRL+ALT+DEL.

Also on my Internet program, when i open it and it has all of the list of scans. Eg; Antivirus, Antispyware.

When i open it, it says that theres a problem with that and the process cannot be excecuted (not in these exact words) and it asks to be updated. But, of course, i cannot access the internet. Therefore its a chain affect which obviously has stuffed up allot of things. The programs that i have used to get rid of things like these, have all been used, yet, nothing changes, its still horrifically slow and frustrating.

Please i tried to give as much detail as possible and i really would like some help here. I need this problem to be resolved! Does anyone know how this can be fixed? Please, please comment here with some useful information.
Why does my internet explorer freeze everytime i connect my internet?
Hi

this sounds like a lot of conflict here, you need to chose which system you are going to use. either internet explorer or firefox. that would be a start. as they are in conflict.

i am a firm believer in KISS this system is not kiss its a mess.

KISS Keep it simple stupid.

it needs rebuilding and some programs need forgetting.

It would seem you are trying to do far too many different things with this.

Try to understand although we are supposed to be able to do all these things with a computer there are limitations.

in your case i would also say you only get what you pay for it this life.anti-virus buy a good antivirus software package. leave the freeby stuff alone.

The tasks you are trying to complish with one P.C. could be the problem.

Also a more modern motherboard would do this easier.
Why does my internet explorer freeze everytime i connect my internet?
i was having this kind of problem with my computer as well, you mentioned that when you open internet program there is a list of scans well my brother this is a spyware or malware problem. i tried lot of antivirus and antispywares to get rid of this but the program that worked for me was Malwarebytes so try it. you can download it from the site mentioned below and in case this does not help than use the oldest solution reinstalling windows moreover try using firewalls programs to stop unwanted access to your computer.

UNLIMITED Internet service/ access provider (preferably wireless but not mandatory)?

I currently have Verizon Wireless Internet Service and HATE it! When I purchased the service and signed up for my 2 year contract it was unlimited access for 60 a month. Now they've changed things, and I'm only allowed 5gb a month. (not a problem for most people, but I run a business online and use the web ALOT! ) Had a big week this month and went over the 5gb, now they're charging me a 160 overage fee on top of my already steep monthly fee! I really wouldn't care, but the service is soooo slow anyway its ridiculous to pay that much for such crappy service.... ok sorry enough of my venting.

So does anyone know who offers UNLIMITED internet access (or at least a limit of 6-7gb), preferably High Speed internet. wireless access is a plus but I suppose it's not as Crucial. I also am constantly refreshing and uploading/ downloading huge files (which is the main prob with verizon, it takes decades to down/upload something and then you just waste your usage allowance!...but I digress)

OK so again, here is the low down: I need:

*High Speed Internet (7-10mbps) with UNLIMITED Access (or a monthly usage limit of at least 6-7gb)

*For use of downloading/ uploading huge files etc, and of course other essential internet usage.

*Wireless is also a plus but not mandatory.

*and 60 or UNDER monthly would be lovely as well

Thanks for your time, if you need more details I can give em to ya! :)

*P.S* I've also calculated the term of my contract with what I would have to pay to switch to another service, the early termination fee and my overage fee; and from what internet plans I've reviwed, I will still end up saving 300 over the term of my Verizon contract if I terminate Verizon and switch to a different company. So really, anything you can throw at me with my requirments listed above I KNOW I'll be much happier than with %26quot;internet service which must not be named%26quot;

Thanks! XD
UNLIMITED Internet service/ access provider (preferably wireless but not mandatory)?
Well, I'm not entirely sure this is what you're looking for but if you're looking for home Internet service then I've been happy with my service from Qwest. I have unlimited wireless internet with them. Here's a link to their various packages:

http://www.qwest.com/residential/interne鈥?/a>

If I read it right, a home phone isn't required. I don't know if you live in their service area though.

If you're talking about mobile phones, then I'd have to do some more checking around.

I hope this helps a little bit.

Good luck!
UNLIMITED Internet service/ access provider (preferably wireless but not mandatory)?
Comcast.
Unfortunately, all wireless carriers have imposed a 5gb limit. The only exception is Sprint and that's only using the 4G service. Your only other options would be DSL or a cable modem.

Wireless carriers treat the 5gb differently. Some will keep charging you excess fees, some will terminate service at that lever and some slow the connection down to roughly the same speed as dial up.
Unfortunately, for DSL, you're pretty much limited to your Verizon service (unless your local telco is someone other than Verizon - in that case, talk directly to your telco company - Verizon is just reselling their service). You might be able to get cable internet where you are, which usually doesn't impose the small download limits DSL companies do. You can simply contact your cable company. Either way, always go to the source - Internet Service Providers simply are middlemen between you and your local telco/cable companies.

Wireless access may be available in your area, but the prices are usually pretty high, plus the lease fee for the antenna/modem, and they usually impose limits similar to DSL.

If you're constantly downloading the same files over and over (like multiple computers doing Windows Updates), an old computer (even a 486 will work) set up as a caching proxy server using some form of Linux will intercept the communication from you the your ISP if it's the same information, and serve it to you instead of using your allocated bandwidth. This may be overkill though, unless you are CONSTANTLY downloading the same things.

Another option is getting a T1, which has the advantage of being a guaranteed speed all the time (1.5MB), along with a 1.5MB upload speed (great if you're serving your own web sites for example), and usually having a very large bandwidth cap (our's is 500GB per month) The downside is price, which is usually about $300-$400 a month.

Unfortunately, those are the only really good options. You're at the mercy of the local communications companies.

Hope that helps,

Jason

  • How can I share one e-mail account with 15 computers simultaneously?

I work for a small business that has approximately 15 separate computers, all connected to the internet. Our business has a single e-mail account, which is shared among all of the computers for both receiving and sending messages.

Currently, we use our ISP's web mail client to use the mail on these computers. Unfortunately, this poses a problem. Let's say that Computer A is currently checking the mail when Computer B, in a different office down the hall, decides to also check the mail. When this happens, Computer A is disconnected from the mail server, a normal security function of the web mail client which, unfortunately, cannot be disabled.

A recent change in our business operation now requires that more than one computer at a time be allowed to use the mail account. This means that the ISP's web mail client is no longer a workable option, since it only allows one computer at a time to connect. So, we are looking for an alternative.

At first we thought about setting up an e-mail client on every computer and configuring them to not delete the messages from the ISP's mail server, but this would raise two new problems:

    1. Once a message has been downloaded on one computer, it will not be downloaded again by any other computers after that, even though it is still on the server (After being downloaded a message is marked as read, which means any further download attempts will ignore it). For example, if there's a new message intended for Computer A, but Computer B checks the mail first, then Computer A will never receive the message.

    2. If configured to leave the messages on the ISP's mail server, then eventually the mailbox will fill up, and no new incoming messages will be allowed at all. This would take only a matter of hours, as we receive many dozen messages a day with large attachments (5MB+), and our ISP has our mailbox capped at 100MB.

So, I am seeking a more efficient way to share this single e-mail account with all 15 computers, with emphasis that more than one computer should be allowed to use the mail simultaneously and have access to ALL messages, new and old, at the same time. What I have in mind is the following:

Designate one of the computers on the network as the %26quot;master%26quot;. This computer will, on a regular basis (Once per hour or so), download the mail and save it on its hard drive. Then, whenever any other computers on the network want to check the mail, they will then connect to the master through its own web mail client, and retrieve the messages from it instead of connecting to the ISP's mail server. Likewise, any messages being sent will go through the master, which will then direct them to our ISP's outgoing SMTP server.

How would I go about setting something like this up? As mentioned before, the ability for two or more computers to be checking the mail simultaneously is a requirement, as is the ability for all computers to access ALL messages, including old messages. We most desire a free option/setup, but if it will cost money, let's try to keep it under $100. Linux is not an option, this must be able to run on one of our currently-existing computers, which are all running XP.

Perhaps an extension for Mozilla Thunderbird that adds a web mail interface to it? (Thus using Thunderbird to download and store the messages, with the extension allowing other computers on the network to remotely read those messages and send messages).

I appreciate any input on this.
How can I share one e-mail account with 15 computers simultaneously?
I share Email accounts over three computers using Outlook. I set the computers to leave the emails on the server for 7 days. About once a month I use web mail to delet the emails that somehow slip through the crack and are not deleted.

How can I safely setup a PC for public access?

I need to setup a PC in a business center of a hotel. I want to find an easy way to configure the system so that each customer who logs in can easily access the internet but when they logout the system automatically deletes all temporary files and cookies. I also want to prevent anyone from making changes to the drivers or settings in the computer. Is there an easy way to do this in XP or is there a software I can use? Thanks in advance...
How can I safely setup a PC for public access?
First set it up where their just one user is under %26quot;Guest%26quot; in the windows adminstration setting,%26quot;under user accounts%26quot; in the control panel you'll find that.

Guest's can't do nothing but access desktop icons and will have other limited usage. They won't be able to mess with the drivers or anything else leaving them with the option of just using the computer for what it's there for.

The temporary files and cookies however you can have your system cleared out if you modify the internet history setting on internet explorer to be kept there every %26quot;0%26quot; days.

You don't have to be a whiz to setup just one computer for Hotel guests to use in the lobby with restrictions, just follow what I said and it'll be easy. All you have to worry about is where you set the computer up, make sure its in an open environment (preferably infront of the check-in desk where hotel personnel can monitor the computer) to prevent physical vandalism of the computer.

The guy below doesn't know what he's talking about.. if he was certified he would easily tell you a possibly better alternative to what I mentioned. I've done computer co-operative education with certified computer techncians but I had a career change so i decided not to go into computer repairs since I don't want to work at a Circuit city... or some meanless computer repair centre. I'm a programmer now and one of my friends a computer technician and I myself can work on computer hardware aswell as troubleshoot and program so the guy below has next to nill experience. Try setting it up the way I mentioned, you won't go wrong.
How can I safely setup a PC for public access?
Well, without the help of God himself, it would be very diffucult to design and implement via an internet response. It also bears no guarantee.

My suggestion, if you are not an advanced or even certified user/technician would be to get ahold of one and bite the bullet on cost of labor.

***By the way, PLEASE don't listen to the person before me... Totally incorrect info!

(Question: Is there no Systems/MIS/IT dept. at this hotel with a business center?)
Just curious - why not use Linux for this?

If you use XP Pro you can take advantage of the group policy manager (gpedit.msc) and that will help some. Take a look at http://www.microsoft.com/resources/docu > and the kinks for more info.
