More and more people around the world are becoming online marketers which need internet access where ever they are so that they can look after their online business. By providing internet access free of charge in their hotels/resorts will draw more guests to them.
On the contrary, the guests have to pay a very high price to get internet access within the hotels/resort no matter where you are in Thailand. Nobody pay for that high price, off course, because at the internet cafe' you can get as low as 1 baht/ min.
If they couldn't make any money, why they don't give the access for free and gain more customers for their core business.
Whether or not the managment of hotels/resorts in Thailand change their concept of providing internet access?
I've stayed in hotels that offer it for free and others that charge for it in Thailand. I usually end up paying just about the same amount overall no matter what their policy is. I don't think we will ever get it for free since the hotel has to incur a cost to provide the service. It all comes down to how they market their hotel offering. I personally think that advertising free interent access and charging more for the room is better than the other way around. People will see the 'free' part and really don't know that its just included in the price. Plus distributing the cost over all patrons will reduce the price increase of the room while maintaining a similar income for the hotel.

In most of the hotels I stay in these days in Thailand there is free internet, either in the business center or have a free connection in the room
If it incurs them a cost then that cost will certainly be passed on, so in the end it is in the rates.
It doesn't bother me at all paying a small amount in a local internet shop or cafe.
I don't think I would every choose one hotel over another because they gave free internet, other factors such as location, facilities, service and of course the rate would be far more important.
Wiring up the country will take time as their land lines are not fully digital yet. Cost can be quite high just trying to get a line. The main cities are slowly getting modernised with internet connections. Compared to couple of years ago, you cannot even find many hot spots in Bangkok, unlike now. So, it is on the way, slowly.
