I have a forced air / heat furnance in my rental home. I was notified late this afternoon that the system doesn't turn on. When speaking with the maintenance technician he noted the furnace controler is %26quot;fried%26quot; and non functional. The furnance is manufactured by Consolidated Industries and approx 9 years old. The technician mentioned this company is currently out of business with spare parts pretty much non existant. He mentioned the control box needs to be changed but the spare part could not be purchased since they are out of business. Doing research of my own and having the owners manual I found the replacement and original part is made by honeywell and very easy to find via the internet. He mentioned that because the part is not available he wants to replace the furnace with a new one at a cost of 3k dollars. Does is sound like he is trying to pull a fast one on me? Should I consider replacing the furnace since it is over 9 years old or is there more life to expect?

Furnaces can last for years with the proper maintenance...if it has honeywell parts on it you can find them about anywhere....i would get someone else to fix my furnace as it is obvious this guy is trying to dupe you.....I have retrofitted furnaces for years that havent been made since the 1960's and as long as the furnace is in good shape there is no reason to change it because it has an electrical problem....200 dollars to retrofit or 2 to 3 thousand dollars to change out furnace....not a hard decision to make...

Average life of a furnace is 20-25 yrs. This guy is trying to pull one on you. Get another furnace man. Furnace life, just like a car's, varies with how much it is used (Minneapolis will use it a lot more than St. Louis) and the care that it has been given
Furnace is only at half of its life expectency and if you can find the board but the tech cannot you might want to look for another company to do your service
